1816 Stipple Engraving, Flying Squirrel
Pierre Jean Francis Turpin
Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles 1816-1829
First sent to the Royal Printing House of France from 1816-1829, it was then published in Italian in 1837 by Batelli & Sons.
This work is truly unique, in that it encompasses the entire
“natural world” of the title page, and includes
illustrations spanning the entire animal and plant kingdom. Turpin was
one of the greatest botanical painters of his time. Largely self
taught, he was inspired by the botanical painter Poiteau whom he met in
Santo Domingo. Turpin was stationed there in the French army &
Poiteau was a plant collector for the Jardin des Plantes. Turpin
collaborated on many works during his lifetime, including this
monumental work of some 29 volumes.
