Audubon Olympic Flying Squirrel
John James Audubon is best known for The Birds of America. His other major
accomplishment was the creation of The Quadrupeds of North America (1849-51-54). The 155 plates of North American mammals were published in an octavo size measuring 7 x 10.5 inches. The prints are hand-pulled stone lithographs that were then watercoloured by hand. There were 2,004 copies of the first edition sold. One hundred of these volumes were used as gifts to foreign governments from the U.S. government. The OLympic Flying Squirrel is a classic example of this first edition of The Quadrupeds of North America, published in 1849.
