Any of a group of unicellular, multicellular, or syncytial spore-producing organisms feeding on organic matter, including molds, yeast and mushrooms. Fungi (plural of fungus) digests its food externally and absorbs the nutrient molecules into its cells. Fungi are the primary decomposers of dead plant and animal matter in forest ecosystems.
